Dopamine Dressing - What is it?

Hi all,

Super excited to talk to you today about Dopamine dressing 👗 - one of the “it” terms of the last few weeks I feel. How do we apply it to Fashion Psychology? Do you know what it is? Have you heard about it on TV, or online? Do you actively think about it and discuss it? Let me know in the comments below and join me both on IG & Amazon Live to talk about it!

Dopamine Dressing

If you go through #DrCsDressForTheMoodYouWant posts you’ll see I’ve spoken quite a bit about how choosing certain pieces of clothing can have an impact on our mood, thinking, and behavior. There’s been quite a bit of interest in Dopamine dressing so let’s dive in the topic & the neuroscience behind it.

Dopamine is one of our “happy” neurotransmitters and it’s part of our reward center. So when our brain produces dopamine in response to something we do, we can then feel good and want to do more of that same thing to feel good again.

When we apply that to fashion psychology, it means that when we wear certain clothing that we associate with happiness & feeling good, then wearing that or similar clothing again will likely produce the same feeling.

This doesn’t mean that layering clothes with bright colors and prints will necessarily make us feel happy or good. Sure, there are certain associations with certain colors that can lift our mood but this experience is quite subjective and will be different for everyone. So while yellow and orange can make one feel great, neutrals like the color black could make another person also feel good.

So we ultimately want to find and learn what clothes makes us feel good so when we wear them again we will feel good again.
