3 signs someone is likely lying to you.

Body language doesn’t lie. 3 signs someone is likely lying to you.

-Sudden eyebrow movements and wide eyes.

Why? Sudden eyebrow raises or eyes widening/opening for just a split second may show a flash of guilt, fear, discomfort, or surprise potentially related to fabricating a story or getting caught. They will then quickly correct their reactions to avoid revealing their true emotions. Keep in mind that genuine emotions tend to be expressed more symmetrically on both sides of the face. Assymentical expressions, particularly in the eyes and eyebrows can be a sign of deception.

-Sudden changes in posture - leaning away, crossing arms, or turning slightly away.

Why? It can indicate discomfort  under the pressure of maintaining a lie or defensiveness. Sudden posture changes may also indicate that their body’s nonverbal cues are out of sync with what they’re saying. For example, if someone leans away or crosses their arms while they’re talking, it may mean that they don’t really believe what they’re saying.

-Subtle swallowing/clearing the throat or licking their lips.

Why? Being nervous can lead to a dry mouth
causing more swallowing or lip licking. Keep in mind someone that that doesn’t have guilt for actions, won’t do this. And if someone tends to be nervous in social situations they may also experience this. It’s important to keep in mind their personality, as there will be differences and exceptions including those that are neurodivergent.

The best way to detect deception is by observing these behaviors in addition with inconsistencies in what they’re saying or changes in their normal behavior. Context is key and be mindful of cultural nuances and individual differences in personality, including those that are neurodivergent.
