What is Lucky Girl Syndrome?

Hi all,

You may have noticed scrolling and encountering many posts on LUCKY GIRL SYNDROME. Its premise is that if you’re able to believe that you’re lucky then good things will happen to you. So how does this work and is this real or just nothing more than toxic positivity?

Repeating affirmations to yourself like “I’m lucky” and that “good things happen to me” plays into a confirmation bias. We will remember the things that worked out for us and overlook the things that didn’t. And the more we repeat it, the more we believe it, and the easier it can be to have these thoughts again in the future.

Our thoughts impact our mood and actions so if we are to believe that we are lucky, then imagine all the things you would try or how hard you would persist in a challenging situation if you believed you would have a positive outcome. The same mentality goes for if we believe we won’t be lucky then why would we ever try something new or keep trying in a difficult situation?

Our human brain can change and grow, even into adulthood so why not take part in the lucky girl syndrome? Just be sure to not overlook the hard work that it may take to achieve said results. And remember that unlucky bad things do happen and it can be hard to claim that we were lucky in that scenario (toxic positivity).

While repeating these affirmations may seem quick and easy, make sure to practice this skill for at least 2 months, as that is the time that’s needed for any new behavior to stick and become more automatic.
